It wasn't until 1971 that our currency was taken completely off the Gold Standard, but I understand the gold reserves backing up the currency had shrunk to such a small percentage, it didn't make that big a difference.I've heard opinions that say the Fed should be taken completely out of private hands (the member banks), but that would mean giving all control to the government.

Depending on your location, you may be able to put the system on a clock timer to limit the operation (you will need to monitor the interior temps to make sure you meet codes in the worst weather), you may also benefit from a PAIR of thermostatic controls (the exact name escapes me right now) that are pre-set for the on or off temp, and are NOT adjustable.

I have seen it myself in the eastern block when the government issued the new currency which was the same as the old currency but the exchange rate was 1000 of the old currency for 1 of the new currency.Obviously he is so far off base because he has never seen his property tax bill.
