I am not high-frequency trader type by nature, with "balanced" risk/performance views if to be characterized by wall street terms... my goal to be equal or above 8% yield (really want to say 10% :)) while learning notes, hopefully getting into riskier assets with time (NPN) and getting into 15-18% territory within 3-5 years.

As far as your crowdfunding site question, my inclination is that the IRS would consider this the same as buying a stock or mutual fund as an investment and not being an active trader or real estate investor that would qualify you as being "in business".
