But we have stayed in some places like this and have very much enjoyed it, and were thinking of doing it near a national park (not Smokies but somewhere truly more "out there) or in northern MN near Lake Superior (there are some really beautiful glamping or dome type places up there already that are super popular).

It also seems like, for whatever reason, the area has been relatively economically depressed while being surrounded by incredibly affluent areas of Westchester County, so I'm wondering why/how that has happened, particularly when some of the houses particularly in the north are absolutely stunning--like, if they were moved 10 miles further into Westchester County would sell for 400%+ of their list price.

They're the shiny new toy but I agree with some of the comments, the recruiting gets annoying and the lack of homework is stunning at times. 

When you figure 13.5% sales tax that the taxing authorities are already receiving from your vacation rental, plus the newly-doubled property tax, it is simply stunning how much they are actually making off of vacation rentals.
