Hey Tony, I'm in the process of becoming a lead paint inspector in MA (currently in my apprenticeship after passing the state test and training) and I can help you with the lead paint laws in MA. 

We were also advised by the inspector before the sale to get the chimney inspected and install a glass front on the fireplace (currently it's just the mesh screen.) 

I would get a building inspector or some contractor opinions on stabilizing and sprucing up the cabin.   

Perhaps as people start getting these inspections we can share some inspectors who aren't being total hard-asses?

One other thing to add is to get a great home inspector to give you an inspection that you will turn into a punchlist on any property.
