The rental market in Cleveland is strong, with a high percentage of renters, so as long as you're asking for reasonable rents, the property is in good shape, and you are actively marketing the property, it shouldn't be vacant for more than 30-45 days.

Zoning is very loose in this area so was thinking maybe some smaller cabins or tree houses or maybe a yurt. 

So the heavy lift for the multi-family route for newbies is the extra capital needed.

Hey @Grant Woodward, you can never be too cautious when it comes to guest safety like @Lauren Kormylo said.There are dozens of things at your STR that could cause an injury or worse so making sure all the ducks are in a row and quackin' in unison is one of the most important things you can do.Like @John Underwood said, make sure you have a rock solid insurance policy that covers the pool and adjoining areas.

Since this situation was so egregious (IMO), I would either boot them out now, or at least have a serious talk, real serious....If you're going to let them stay I would just get a really deep cleaning done, maybe a couple, and then replace carpet after they're gone.
