We didn't clean it for 2 years and a solid column of grease formed (7ft thick) and crushed the pumps at the bottom of the sewage containment unit.

(My dad does solar hot water in New England)Insulation is great, windows are great, thick walls with the wood cabin sides.

I have on some of my properties put thick cardboard, and bubble wrap in the windows ( bubble wrap bubble part facing outward, and then the thick cardboard) in the windows, and in one of my 2 bedroom townhouses I have kept the electric bill lower than $100 a month.

For example, the foundations are 2'+ thick, modern is 8"-12".

This theme flows throughout all systems and materials, hence why 2'+ thick foundations are common in the turn of century homes and exclusive to multi-million dollar builds today. 

You can mix it as thin or as thick as you like, but only have so much of a window to work with it.

The bathroom itself was a 55k renovation (in wall floating bidet and toilet, custom made cabinets, 30" tiles everywhere except ceiling, walk in shower with thick glass, ditra everywhere), all high quality stuff.

I've owned houses as old as 1840, the walls were 2 feet thick stone.
