When paying a bird dog should I have an agreement or simply keep my word?

As far as getting out from behind the screen to gain experience, for us who are just getting started, would you recommend working for free under a wholesaler for a bit, bird dogging for another investor, just driving the areas we are interested in, all of the above?

If you are willing to make the time hook up with a local investor and be a bird dog or offer some other value to that person on exchange for being able to shadow them.
