I recommend reading “Long-Distance Real Estate Investing: How to Buy, Rehab, and Manage Out-of-State Rental Properties” - I found it to be very helpful when I got started investing 2.5 years ago.

REI hands down for turn key professionally flipped and managed property from a distance. 

I couldn't afford near home either (SoCal), did MTR long distance but management can be extensive for MTR.

I’d also like to learn more about long distance investing so that I’m not tied to a specific market.

We will be looking at small multi-family properties as BRRRRs and/or long term holds in both WBS area and Allentown area because I am currently commuting to Bethlehem for my job 4 days a week (not a fun or cheap commute). 

3) if my husband and I are long distance for job, if i fly to his place to close the deal, can the cost deduct from the rental income?

I'm considering turning them into short-term rentals, but I'm unsure how to manage the cleaning team from a long distance.

With that low a response rate I recommend revisiting your rent, how does yours compare with other similar properties within commuting distance of your house?

Target people that commute to a job in the city but want county schools.

Meaning, do you want need a reasonable commute time?
