Is it possible that one of the offers that were going back and forth had some sort of "Time Is Of Essence" provision stating that unless the offer was formally rejected within a certain time limit (week, day, hour)  by a certain method (1st class mail, hand delivery, carrier pigeon) that the offer would be considered accepted?

They only sell Carrier and Daikin, which are fancier than the currently installed Goodman unit.Is there any real savings to be had by purchasing the unit directly from an HVAC or plumbing supply house?

When you call up an agent and ask for a quote on a $1M Whole Life, for example, the agent is going to give you the lowest price possible to be competitive with all the other carriers offering quotes.

I went with Ft Worth Insurance Co, Safeco is the carrier. 

However, alternating back and forth between the two solvent carriers is your issue.
