I wasn't around during the Great Depression or WWII (and I assume neither were you), but I seem to recall from my MBA economics classes that quite a bit of Keynesian policy was used to pull us out of the first and generate an abundant global economy during the second.

While getting my MBA, I spent a lot of time building expansive financial models to determine the valuation of publicly-held companies, and I took that same approach and made a very detailed model for my current (and future) investment properties. 

RE license, college education, mba (well...or least a semester :) ), etc.
