I don't have much to put as a down payment...Am I biting off more than I can chew on my first go around?

Lots of feces in the backyard grass, paw prints all over the back patio and the back door is a little chewed on.  

Should we go for it or would we be bitting off more than we can chew?

I'm a big fan of the theory of biting off more than you can chew and then chew it! 

I am not the biggest investor and may have bit off more than I can chew this round, so I am willing to do what it takes to make this happen...

Sounds like you're doing well so far, just don't grow too fast and bite off more than you can chew. 

Unless it was an animal that had real potential to damage the property (think dogs, cats, parrots that can chew trim, stain carpet, etc.) we tended not to require a pet deposit.  

I am new to the real estate industry and want to make sure that I do not bite off more than I can chew, while still making headway.

However, there is the chance that if the dog gets bored or is being destructive it can chew up your cabinets or trim etc.

I'm generally unimpressed with the ability of dog owners to provide for their dogs, have seen way too many instances where the poor dogs are mostly ignored and bark all day, chew up the units.
