The questions was whether my fire escapes are up to code, and since the Fire Department approval was given in 1940, on a small slip of paper, it's grandfathered even though it doesn't meet current codes.

It’s basically an escape clause for you if you want to bail but not a real issue. 

Besides the obvious that it is a path for some people to escape out of the lower than average socio-economic situation, the training, team building, and exposure to people from many walks of life is probably the greatest benefit that is hard to find elsewhere.

Beside the “subject to” that’s recently become the subject of much debate we utilized  ”no interest short term owner financing”, the “2nd mortgage crank”, substitution of collateral, mortgage subordination, wrap loans, real estate “exchange” (not for tax reasons), sale - lease back, guaranteed rent payments, sale - buy back, land offered in lieu of down payment, zero coupon bonds as substitution of collateral, and a few others that escape my memory.
