However, that would mean a long commute for my son.

Lot's of people work from home and the need for a financial district and commuting to the city is now a thing of the past for most. 

Once the infrastructure improves where people can live near where they work and commute times are under 30 minutes there could be a return to the office.

I'm also considering moving out of the USA if I'm unable to find a state with a lower cost of living and less stress (commute, crowds of people, high taxes, etc) than California.  

In Northern NJ, to make 100k, your buy-in price would be around 600k or more.Haven't done any, but I wanted to choose somewhere with a 1hr commute radius so I can keep monitoring it.

@Dan KielySugar Land and Katy are family-friendly suburbs with good schools, a strong job market, and a safe environment, but have higher property taxes and commute times.

I’ll be moving to Fairfield county and commuting to my day job in NYC.From central ct originally so would like to be closer to home..a garage and car would also be nice ;)

Having things local is great for management, once you get into 1-2 hrs + commute I would hire PM.
