My wife likes shades of purple wall paint and hate's earth tones. 

Not trying to throw shade...just finally recognizing the need for a well funded and competent government.  

It looks like he choose something darker than oak to stain it with, perhaps to cover imperfections.

Definitely would go with a darker grout. 

But I heard that shade tree is good to have in summer and may raise house value somehow.

I would be inclined to put it in the shade and where it is easy to mow around or doesn't need to be mowed around.
