Its a bit more pricey and if I remember correctly you need to put a wax coating over top after it dries but we have had great experience with chalk paint.

Don't apply it too thick because the thicker it is, the more sanding you have to do to smooth it out before painting.

My guess (as an amateur with limited knowledge) is that a professional charging $50 an hour should be able to get the first base coat down on that entire room in one day.
