I contacted the previous owner and he eventually came to pick up some old tools and such but left the photo albums and other personal/sentimental items.

I agree with some of the sentiment here, but it's important to internalize your risk tolerance and determine if you and your husband are comfortable taking on the additional risk or if it's most beneficial to put the ~$200,000 back into your current residence and lower your monthly payments.

Nonetheless, Andrew's agreement with your sentiment (but non-agreement from the other investors) does show that multi-investors in the same property can be problematic, especially if every opinion is supposed to have equal weight.Also, it's probably because they are joint-owners that they got diddled out of a decent mortgage Interest Rate themselves.

My two cents.The estate exemption in 2020 is  $11,580,000It normally jumps between $5 million and $11 million depending on the party in office and estate tax law changes, etcI do agree with your sentiment though, the amount of estate tax collected from people dieing from covid is likely not a thing to be concerned about.
