If not a war zone, then lights, a SimpliSafe system, and a radio playing some light music should do well as a deterrent.  

It has a good base of restaurants, bars, music venues, etc. that attract young professionals looking for something different than Uptown.

Soccer, music, reading, being with family, and traveling/adventuring are some of my interests/hobbies.
