I used a commercial-style Diakin cassette system in a finished lower level renovation of a house on the Battery with good results, but it was a situation where a ducted system was simply not an option.  

The only challenge is replacing batteries, but I schedule it for once a year along with my smoke detectors.

Home Depot now sells Smoke Detectors with 10 year internal batteries that can't be changed.  

Sometimes she changes light bulbs and replaces batteries in remotes and thermostats. 

Did it need updated smoke detectors and are you using 10 year life battery detectors or 9v battery operated?  

It might not have addressed your past issues, but I now put $10 battery water alarms next to the washing machine, water heater and under the sink.

My PM's contractor gave us an estimate of things to be repaired and it includes things like $50 for replacing smoke detector batteries, $50 for repairing shower handle, $60 for caulking tub, $200 for changing locks.

@Kevin Colwick, here is the interior- repair/replace damaged sheetrock- wipe down and clean all walls throughout house- wipe down and clean all doors and throughout house- paint trim and doors- replace missing/broken blinds- replace missing/damaged doorstops- replace all light switch and outlet covers- replace missing/broken light bulbs- make sure all doors open/shut properly- make sure all windows open/close properly- replace air filter- replace batteries in the smoke detectors- remove all trash from attic- remove all trash- wipe down and paint all ac vents

Many smart thermostats say you can install it without power from the furnace, but this just means it's running off batteries.
