Granted, this number is skewed by a few metropolitan markets {Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton}, but even here in the "relatively poor" Maritime Provinces the average house price is ~$175K (up 5.7% year over year)As of 2011 {last year of published data}, median family income in Canada was $72,240 and average family income was slightly higher at 79,600 ... the trend over the last decade has been keeping par with inflation.

@Chris NordsveenIn the Maritimes, where things move a little more slowly, most buy-and-hold investments are predominately cash flow plays - the Halifax region being a possible exception.In places like Moncton and Saint John you can achieve returns >12%, but you need to know the market and the area - sometimes the distance of 1-2 blocks can be the difference between a good deal and a nightmare.

@Danielle Jones100+ year old properties are common here in the Maritimes and we have a few.One of our primary objectives is to improve the energy efficiency of these older properties by 40 - 70% {so far they older ones have all turned out near, or above, the 70% mark}.

I am getting out in 2 years, and intend on going to California Maritime Academy, or SUNY Maritime to pursue a license to drive ships and eventually become a Captain.
