I spent my W2 career running local governments and it is hard to explain to a lot of people who see the government as their be-all, end-all conduit to equity and fairness that much of what you might try to enact under the guise of good intentions actually comes back to bite the very people it's supposed to help.

If you cannot delay gratification, you are unlikely to be successful in anything because most things in life that are deeply satisfying - getting fit, getting an advanced education, moving deeply through a career, achieving financial success, etc - takes a lot of time and effort and requires sacrificing many short-term niceties and pleasures for long-term achievement.
