I think it all depends on: what the general practice is in your county, appetite of the lender to fund you knowing that there could be contamination issues, you're appetite and budget to get involved in what can be an extremely expensive remediation process, and the prevalence of tanks where the house is.

Those problems are even more prevalent in other parts of the world + you have things like real estate ownership laws and political instability.

Steve, if you send me a check down here, I can call your bank and see if there are sufficient funds to clear that check, I simply ask for clearance on that amount and account number. ...Bill, these days banks aren't always doing that due to the prevalence of identity theft.
