I always thought that in need to invest where I lived and for may years invested in bad areas that I thought I needed to.

If this is a bad deal because of $1,500/yr in interest run away and have your family sell the property. 

I had a house in an area like this (previous HVAC was stolen while the house was vacant) although it doesn't seem nearly as bad as your area.

That doesn't make them bad, per se, it is just a very difficult market right now. 

All complimented with Amazon fulfillment centers, google, and more tech manufacturing jobs.The bad reputation of “Detroit” comes from OOS investors wanting sub $40,000, D class properties in poor condition, because they pencil out to 2-3% deals on paper.

One thing we, as humans, are consistently bad at is predicting the future - especially when it comes to political and economic shifts. 

Maybe there is something to learn, but most of the time it just makes you feel bad. 

You guys make great money so buying a home isn't bad.

I'm not a tax expert and dont know how this would conflict with the tax deferred basis, but if doable, this isnt a bad option, either.
