The company we used to use would use Bondo to patch any holes or cracks, then refinish the tub with an epoxy coating.

Wood cabinets can also be refinished by stripping off the top coat (varnish, polyurethane, etc.) and either sanded down to bare wood, bleached, or just re-topped with a clear finish or a stain and finish like Minwax Polyshades.
