Mayor Emanuel’s latest five-year housing plan (passed in December by the City Council) included a section that mentioned accessory dwellings.

I heard that there are some proposed zoning changes that will loosen restrictions for ADU (accessory dwelling units). 

What I settled on buying, however, was a single family home with a mother in-law accessory apartment in Utah Valley. 

At least that makes it more coveted, and in ten years the demand for appraisers will stay strong.

When a landlord is aware of a risk in their property and takes no action, they become an accessory.

Hey @Petra S JordanAs for the question of legality, I can tell you that in order to rent out out a mother in-law apartment or accessory apartment you are required to owner occupy the home.

Then I would ask them what it looks like in terms of cost for them to permit and build an accessory backyard structure, including all their fees.

You might be able to argue an accessory use, though it would still require you to go through zoning to get it. 

But having so many kitchens and bathrooms defeats the goal of low cost.I think the most sensible thing to do in order to reduce cost by cohabitating is to split the house into a main part and an accessory dwelling unit, and have two kitchens total shared by five people.
