I suspect it is a boiler (probably with period cast iron radiators).

I have been teaching myself the basics for a year now through pod casts, internet research and the occasional REIA meeting.

First, that overflow pipe may be short like mine; Second, the overflow pipe was not property seated on the back of the tub, so it leaked; Third, those leaks have corroded the back of the cast iron tub, and lastly, once I opened the wall cavity, I can smell a bit of sewer gas.

Another older federal regulation; Finance and banking laws and RE laws are intertwined that makes casting a net over a violator of one matter to be in violation of another or several laws.

I have already found the the pod cast to be very informative and encouraging.

Also, if you've got cast iron or lead drains and are opening the walls to fix a leak, I would replace as much as possible with PVC.
