Most of the America is melting in this heat wave, and I wouldn't want anyone, let alone someone with two little ones, suffer in the heat and humidity.. 

In terms of preference, ofcourse closer to LA or NYC is great but if that's not possible, then will any day prefer cooler places -including mountains- than hot and humid florida.

Mostly it was a humidity problem with non cleaning of windowsills causing a majority of the mold.

I have one rental that never used the bath fan and the humidity was so high in the house (in an arid area) that the ceiling fan blades warped.

I use Honeywell 9000 wifi thermostats that send me alerts for humidity or temperature levels I configure.None of these items have monitoring or monthly fees.

Also how do I test for humidity in the basement ?

The interior humidity needs to get down below 35% ASAP or mold will grow.
