Maybe consider the lower edge of the shingles higher in the gable.A new entry door sounds good, make sure it's architecturally correct (NOT Victorian with a big oval glass!!).

You can get great ideas too from Architectural Digest, which I take, but generally the homes featured are not the run of the mill investment properties, just a tad nicer, LOL!

The top floor may want to hide a front bedroom one in a front bay architectural detail to have one unit in the front bedroom and one in the back, or smaller one for each back bedroom.
