If you are leaving the water on in the property you can purchase freeze alarms that you can place in basements and crawl spaces that will alert you if the temperature drops below a pre determined temp, additionally many of these sensors can detect water so if placed near a hot water heater or water source they can alert you if there is a leak or backup.

They'll probably encourage you to fill out online report, so they don't have to come out...and if anyone comes out to take a report, might be a day or two later, and might not even be an officer, certainly not a detective....more like a admin person.

@Adam Martin: I haven't had a cat in 20 years (but I had many growing up), so I think I can detect the odor and I didn't.

And detecting their presence is less surprising when you have an idea of what to look out for.

I also hired a plumber out to do a leak detection visit and nothing was found. 

the lender is foreclosing for nonpayment.You may have to hire a skip-tracer or detective to find the next of kin to buy it from them.

There is no sign of leaks anywhere that I can detect and we have uncharacteristically had several rainy days lately.

I don't know if things changed over time with how pollutants are detected in the soil or if the report was not done correctly.

I spent about $700 for a leak detection company to come out and evaluate whether or not there was a leak on the property when they were complaining.
