Some areas, typically more rural areas, will use a "meets and bounds" survey that says "starting at the SW corner of the NW quarter section of section 14, township 3, range 5, north 100', then north 93 degrees west 300', blah de blah".

Or do you specifically mark every corner where a sign MUST be placed?

I'm currently commuting about 80 miles each way on a dea - but the commute is up the mountains and through a really awesome canyon that I can shred through lots of twisty corners on my bike, so I have absolutely zero complaints about that commute.Also, a 7 pack of junkers is a big job for a first deal. 

That said, none of us really know what is waiting for us around the corner!

There are about 30 townhouse units all less than 3 years old in my two square block residential corner of georgetown neighborhood of seattle  (hipster/artsy neighborhood on edge of commercial and light industrial areas).    6 months to a year ago they were all sold out before even being completed.  

(I had a friend who had food trucks there was a giant garage sale in a wealthy area and he put his truck on a corner of land that someone said he could , he called the health and fire department got permits for that weekend had his insurance with him.
