Easy waste disposal, might be cheaper than shelves.I like the desk in there, but I also cold see a fireplace or wood burning stove in that space, and over the uncovered patio possibly rail type roof to cut the sun load in the windows, and maybe a 6 foot sliding glass door instead of the patio door.Great design--I really like it as is though!
