We've done nice bottles of wine, engraved silverware, gift certs to mid-high end home good stores (restoration hardware, etc), etc.

also don't put hardware on the cabinets that style has pulls already made into the doors and drawers.

Your local hardware store should have plenty to choose from and may require lots of elbow grease.  

Solid wood slab doors are more than sufficient, and not that difficult to get to fit standard sized doors -- would assume that is a 36" might cost you 120 bucks at a good hardware or door specialty shop.

Easy to slip into the wallet, hard to lose.
