Simply because in my mind I would have more windows, be able to walk directly outside (without needing an elevator or long hallway to the main door), and could feel like I come and go as I please.

Any situation where I feel physically stuck brings on a panic attack: when a ski lift stops and does not immediately start back up, I don't ever step foot in an elevator, even in a stairwell if I try a door and it doesn't open I will start hyperventilating.

This would seem unlikely as the condensate water drains back by gravity and so a 4' elevated pipe wouldn't fit the scenario well.BTW:  one-pipe-steam pipes are relatively large  (as they have to simultaneously flow steam in one directions and water in the opposite direction)  so the OP measuring the ize of the pipes will give us better clues.stephen-------------------Originally posted by @Nathan Renner:Possibly, if it is a single pipe in each room, it's probably an old single pipe steam system line.

Because of my 5 foot radius rule, I chatted this landlord up in the elevator, it turned out we had a mutual acquaintance and we spoke in the lobby for about a half hour about different ideas and projects, during which time this same Housing Authority official that dealt with us walked through the lobby and saw us talking.
