you are the negotiator - you can say no at any point - as others said - you decide what your top offer is and that is what you should stick to. the agent might have actually been trying to help you - your own DD and communications w/agent are paramount - sounds to me like you were spooked and now have remorse - that is you and not the agent. the other good advice was do the deal (or not) and move on.

I had the same issue investing in Temple, I saw properties that have been on the market for a while and got spooked, but the issue is that is all that you will see because once the property gets rented out, it is taken off the market.
