Thank you so much John! Yes that kinda solidifies my thoughts that LIC and Flushing are now already too expensive for self-residence. I checked out some new condo units at both and the prices are really high, but there are also more being constructed. The 421-A tax abatement helps a little for some of them but still. I'll try to dig more about Forest Hills. Thanks again!

NYC market is so different from many other cities, but only borough from borough, but also different neighborhoods in the same borough.  I'm tired of paying high rent and considering starting to check some places in Queens, which I think is a little more stable and rational in terms of price, even though it'll be less and slower appreciation.

I picked 3 neighborhoods I want to mainly focus on - Forest Hills, Flushing, and LIC.  Experts familiar with Queens market, what are your suggestions/thoughts/warnings regarding the 3 neighborhoods? Price-wise, building-wise, expense-wise? I kinda like newer modern units, with convenient commute to Manhattan.

Also where do other NY friends check for market listings besides Zillow and StreetEasy? Thanks.

Thanks guys! Appreciate everything and I'll definitely get to the useful links and info above.  This weekend I started reading the beginner's Guide here and also went to LIC and Astoria to check some apartments, both rental and for sale. Good start and I'll try to keep the momentum.

Hi everyone! This is Wei from NYC. Excited to join BP here.

I currently live and work in midtown Manhattan and has a pretty busy job (that's why I moved from Queens to save some commute time and also enjoy the city better). One of my 2016 goals is to better manage my personal finance, since for the past few years I've only cared about and worked on my 401k and Roth IRA. I decide it's time to stop being lazy since I'm not that young any more and the ever-increasing Manhattan rent is killing me! I've always had interest in real estate but never really make a big commitment. Reasons? I guess busy job + NYC's crazy real estate price + being a foreigner + most of my friends are renting cubby holes here + let's admit it real estate could be a little intimidating for a newbie.

Time to change! I'm ready to get serious and explore and learn and network and, no rush but maybe, take some action, either for self residence or investment. I don't really know how to get started but I'm happy to find the community here and also plan to get my hands on some education materials here. In the meantime I look forward to get familiar with the local NYC market and make some friends. Thanks and happy weekend! Hope to meet with some of you soon~
