Newbie from New York City

Hi everyone! This is Wei from NYC. Excited to join BP here.

I currently live and work in midtown Manhattan and has a pretty busy job (that's why I moved from Queens to save some commute time and also enjoy the city better). One of my 2016 goals is to better manage my personal finance, since for the past few years I've only cared about and worked on my 401k and Roth IRA. I decide it's time to stop being lazy since I'm not that young any more and the ever-increasing Manhattan rent is killing me! I've always had interest in real estate but never really make a big commitment. Reasons? I guess busy job + NYC's crazy real estate price + being a foreigner + most of my friends are renting cubby holes here + let's admit it real estate could be a little intimidating for a newbie.

Time to change! I'm ready to get serious and explore and learn and network and, no rush but maybe, take some action, either for self residence or investment. I don't really know how to get started but I'm happy to find the community here and also plan to get my hands on some education materials here. In the meantime I look forward to get familiar with the local NYC market and make some friends. Thanks and happy weekend! Hope to meet with some of you soon~

@Wei Liu

Welcome to Bigger Pockets! You're right, real estate can be intimidating to a newbie. Having that intimidation at first might be good though, in that it shows a healthy respect for the seriousness of investing such significant time and money into an endeavor. The key, I think, is to learn enough through your own research and time spent with experienced investors to overcome that intimidation.

I think too many people jump in without that healthy respect and before building the educational foundation to minimize the risk and ensure the greatest chances for success. Being here is a great step in building that foundation for success.
