Direct mail can be a huge expense with little return if not done effectively. It is very important to make sure whatever you send them is useful and will be opened and is sent to targeted people who will appreciate it.

The US Post Office actually has some great info on direct mail campaigns. I usually make my own mailing lists even though it is by far more time consuming - I also design my own mailers but the printing cost and mailing cost can be pricey. I think we did 500 mailers for $140 plus postage.

Depending on what you're looking for there are a lot of services available. The best thing to do is research, research, research. :)
