 Hello Cody,  Thanks for your interest. This is the sale of the remaining payments and interest due on a real estate note.  Rather than purchasing the property itself you are purchasing the right to collect the balance due on the debt.  It is like being a bank. The buyer maintains the property and pays expenses like taxes and insurance. If that buyer does not pay then the holder of the note has the right to foreclose and take the property back (like the bank).  Often it is a note and mortgage or note and deed of trust being sold.  In some cases it is a Contract For Deed.  Here are a couple of links to help get you started:
