I am selling my house in MA. I currently rent in the RDU area (Knightdale). I am finding that it is more cost-effective (today) for me to rent my primary residence rather than to buy. I also can't afford to own in the side of town that I'd like to be in (Cary/Apex) but can afford to rent (my children were recently accepted to schools in this area).

I'd like to invest the proceeds from the sale of my home in Massachusetts. Would it be possible to purchase a three-family home up north while renting down here? There aren't many duplexes or triplexes down here to purchase. Developers build them.

Hi! What are the tax implications for owning a property in RI and living elsewhere in MA? Example: someone wants to purchase a multi family, house hack for a year on FHA, and then move closer to Boston, are there heavy tax implications? If so, please share. Thank you. I’m torn between buying in Worcester and Pawtucket RI. Both the same commute time from work!

Hello,

I will be purchasing my first property soon. I am in the Northeast, and was wondering if it would be smarter to purchase a three-family home, live in one unit (for 12 months w/FHA) and rent the other two out, and then purchase my first single family when school gets out in 2019...or buy a single family home first and then refinance w/cash out and purchase an investment property? I have three children and I'm concerned about them switching schools too many times within a short period of time. So, the areas that have many of these three-family homes for under 200k are in some of the worst areas. Then again, there are hidden gems. My point is, I am unsure what I should do first, and I have gone back and forth in my head for months now. I can some advice right now! Thanks!

This is good to know because I thought that as long as ONE co-borrower resides in the home, it would be sufficient.

Thank you @Gualter Amarelo! I will definitely check him out!

Congratulations John! That is very exciting! What a great story.
Are you guys still doing this?

Hi Tony, I'm looking to make my first purchase out there as well. Let me know how it goes!

Hi Nick! Yes there is a one year residency requirement for the FHA loans. The problem is that where these houses are listed for cheap: 175k, I don't want to live or want my kids in those neighborhoods. So right now, I live with my dad in a more desirable area. I was thinking about letting my kids live here and doing my normal routine here, letting them remain in school here, and just going "home" 4-5 nights a week and coming back before they wake up. Also was thinking about renting out the other bedrooms in my unit. $400 each?
