@David Korty @Craig Curelop thank you both for your replies. Funny you both mention the license, I am currently about half way through the class to get this license which I’m very excited about! I have thought a lot about property management, as I have some experience as a project manager for a national contracting company. I really enjoyed what I did there as well so definitely something to consider. Can I join on to these types of companies directly as a property manager or so I have to start somewhere else? As for working under a real estate investor, do you recommend just trying to get in with one and trying to shadow them over a long term, or get more of a set position? Thank you guys again!

@Ryan Spearman Be sure to thoroughly read through the scopes of work. Often times prices will differ greatly because of the simple fact that they are doing different things (This is also a way many contractors will try to squeeze money out of you). Another thing to look at is the material being used. Many contractors try to cut corners to make the most money possible for their company, but that is not always what is best for you. Sit down with them and try to understand fully what services they are providing you with.

Another question to ask is how many guys they will have on the job, and if they can guarantee completion during the time you need it since you have a tight timeline.

I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me if you want some more details.

As a college student graduating next year, I have been trying to learn as much as possible about real estate through books, podcasts, and any other outlet that offers help. I am currently studying finance at school, and like many students am not really sure what I want to do after I graduate. What I do know, is that I want to be self-employed. I would like to get a job out of college that will help me do this, specifically in the real estate industry.

As mentioned, I am a Finance major at the University of Iowa. My question to bigger pockets is what do you recommend for a job that would help me in the future of real estate investing? Thank you all for your help and enjoy the weekend!

Hello! I just wanted to introduce myself to the community. I currently am going into my senior year at the University of Iowa, where I am double majoring in Finance and Management. I have grown up working in a national contracting business, and am therefore familiar with how contractors work and communicate (I really enjoy this aspect of RE). Along with that, I have recently begun the course to obtain my realtor's license for the state of Illinois, and am a third of the way through. I have a strong desire to learn as much as possible about all aspects of RE, which is why I have taken the opportunity to work with my Uncle as a mentor, as he is an appraiser and RE investor. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning from him, as well as helping him out in all the ways I have been able to.

I have been listening to the podcast for about a year now, as well as reading books on real estate to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I am very eager to get started in RE as soon as possible. Upon graduation, I plan to live at home and save money until I can buy a 2-4 unit property. I would like to live in one unit, and rent out the others (house hack as I have learned it to be called)!

As mentioned, I am from Illinois and would love to learn as much as I can from all of you. Any advice, education recommendations, or ideas you all have learned from your RE experiences are greatly appreciated! Also, if anyone is looking for a college student to help them out with anything or get a student's point of view on anything, feel free to let me know, and I would be more than willing to help. Thank you for your time!
