Quote from @Basit Siddiqi:

about 5 years ago, i completely withdrew my 401k to invest in real estate.
I have no regrets.

I paid the income tax and 10% penalty.

The withdrawal allowed me to invest in real estate earlier and get real estate investment knowledge faster.
The appreciation and cash-flow that I received from the rentals > 10% penalty, income taxes paid, appreciation that would have grown in limited selection of mutual funds.
I now have complete control of the funds.

Best of luck in your decision.

Wow. I was not expecting a response like this. Many people in the industry are advising against this approach. I am happy to see that this approach worked to your advantage. How long was the payback period if you don't mind me asking? Tomorrow is not promised so am not waiting until 65 to withdraw the funds.

Hello, Avery Carl has a list of supplies from a STR standpoint. I've launched 5 in the last year so happy to discuss the tools I've used. Feel free to send me an PM.

Hey Lien, how were you able to financially launch 5 property rentals?

Quote from @Travis Timmons:

I would not take a tax rate + 10% hit to cash it out. The only way to justify that would be if you think that you can outperform your 401k returns with 30% less cash. That would be unlikely unless you have some sort of domain expertise that would cause you to get an outsized return. I understand the eagerness to get started, but slow and steady still wins the race. Don't give away money in the name of impatience.

Thanks, Travis. I agree the tax rate is just way too high. I plan to focus on STR properties. I am starting with one but now I am limited on funds to further scale to a 2nd, 3rd, etc. property. My 401K is literally just sitting there not doing anything. I dont plan to invest anymore into that fund so need to find a way to leverage it and make it work for me via REI.

Withdrawing 401K entails a 20% tax cut and 10% penalty fee but I want to use it to being my real estate journey and exit my 8-5 in the next 2 years. Any thoughts if this is a good plan?
