Hi Russel.  It would either be in Baltimore County or Baltimore City.  I'm having difficulty finding this out as it seems to be a very specific question I'm trying to answer.  Do you have any recommendations on an easy place to find this information?  Also, what are some of the criteria that those counties follow that prevents/allows the units to be rented separately when the owner does not reside in the property?

Thank you

Hi everyone.  In Maryland, for a house with an in-law suite, is it legal to collect rent on both units if you own the house, but do not live in it?  As in rent the main unit and the in-law suite as a separate unit?

Thank you

Hi Ozzy, my apologies in the delayed response.  I'm assuming the suite would be rented out as a "room" in this instance?  Also, what could happen in eviction court if one were to be in this situation?

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your response!  That does clear some of it up.  Do you by chance remember the judge's name?

Hi Lisa,

Thank you for your response.  We have been working with a realtor as well.  There are definitely a lot of options with the in-law suite, I just want to make sure rental income can be maximized once we move on to another home.  I've realized however, the more we learn, the more we need to learn.  I certainly appreciate your insight!

Hi everyone,

My fiancé and I are looking at our first multifamily home in either, the Baltimore City/Baltimore County areas.  We have come across single family homes with in-law suites and we're still educating ourselves on them.  My question is, is it legal to rent an in-law suite as a separate unit from the rest of the house if we were to move from that house at a later date?

Thank you,

Ryan
