@Julie McCoy Sounds like self managing is definitely the way to go if you are trying to maximize your profits. I'm more interested in breaking even since the property would be for our own benefit of having a place to stay while visiting family/friends in Chicago. Plus self management is not really an option because of the distance.
I suppose it would help to define "self managing". I would be fine handling the marketing, communication with potential renters and screening process. All I would really need is a good, reliable cleaning service and a management company that would work "on-call" for emergencies and handyman related items.
I'm sure there is more that goes into it and I might be overlooking some things a PM would help with.
How many of you manage rentals located in an area outside of where you live? Do you self manage these also? (with the exception of cleaning service, repairs, etc)
