As an unborn newbie, I am interested in learning about being involved for a number of reasons- and had not considered it before.
1-I have been bombarded by "gurus" and this has spiked my interest. In the past there were a few "no money down" barkers on TV, now there seem to be hundreds on the internet.
2- My history of losing in the bad economy- from my employment to my savings for retirement- I want to methodically with hard work begin getting back what I lost.
3- TV definitely peeks my interest with all the rehab shows
4- BiggerPockets- if it wasn't for BiggerPockets, I would be so overwhelmed- yet by reading posts, I am beginning to see if you guys can do it I can do it- haha
5- The economy- it looks like it might begin to be taking an upswing and there looks like there are bargains out there right now, still to be had.
6- Education- I never even heard of wholesaling before I got on the BiggerPockets web site.

The unfortunate side is there are a lot of people that are thinking like I am thinking and the competition is only going to grow- the promises of the big bucks. I am not a get-rich kind of guy, and am just looking to make a fair profit, yet the promises from these gurus are strong.

Hi Brianna, I am even more of a newbie than you are- just a few days into this. Yet on a professional level- I am a social worker and a master life coach and master coach trainer for adolescents. I understand, from what you are saying, is that you have a specific goal in mind and your coach is trying to teach you what is dear to him. Coaching101 will tell you he is the wrong coach for you. As a coach, I would never lead a person down the path that "I want them to go". The goal of coaching is to help a person be their best self and to work through what the clients wants to work through. If you feel he is steering you, he doesn't know how to coach and you need to find someone who is more suited to meet your needs. As I am learning, and you already know, there is so much to learn with real estate investing and what he is attempting to coach you may be important, but it is not what you need right now. And it sounds like, thanks to Bigger Pockets, there are some awesome experienced coaches here that you can find the right one. Never be afraid to tell a coach that he is not the right one for you. As you go through this, I will be interested in seeing your progress and one day I will be looking for a coach in real estate investing and heck, maybe it will be you. : )

Hi all, I have spent my entire life in human services and social work and to be honest I really don't have anything to show for it except to know that I have made a difference in the lives of many people. I am in my 50's and have not saved anything for retirement. My girlfriend recently bought a house and it put me to shame to think I can't even do that. I have made a lot of mistakes financially and have terrible credit. I want my financial life to be different- to be better. I am willing to do whatever it takes. So with all that being said, I am in the worse possible place in my life financially- no savings, bad credit, no equity, but at least I am debt free. I have a great job (even though we are the lowest paid county in North Carolina) as an ON CALL social worker so I have my daytimes free and work evenings and nights. I also take care of my aged parents.

I have the ability to remodel and fix up homes. I enjoy doing that. As a social worker it is easy to get burned out on being with people and like the escape of home remodeling. So my goal is to purchase a house, do repairs and cosmetic work, and then flip. I am not looking for this get rich quick, it just sounds like fun. So I guess my first step what I am looking for is creative financing. Any thoughts and helps of how any of you got started would be appreciated. I would love to find a mentor. Any Western Carolina mentors would be nice to meet.

Thank you for reading my post.
