I would like to add to what frank sanchez suggested.  If the sink has an overflow, the smell can be coming from it.  the overflow drains into the tailpiece before the trap.  I have seen when crud accumulates and then gets wet, it will start smelling.  when it dries, it will go away.  if this is where it is coming from, try pouring bleach down the overflow.  stop up the sink, and run hot water until the sink is full and water is flowing into overflow.  if that doesn't resolve it, you may have to disassemble pop up assembly and clean it out.

@Kevin Coleman from what you are describing, @Matthew Paul

is correct.  I would like to add that it is also possible to have a blockage in the supply line between the supply stop and faucet.
