Post: where do you look for internships in RE

Hello everyone, tonight I'd like to ask the crowd how you got your start in real estate and I'd like to seek your advice. As a freshman finance major at a community college, I want to be as competitive as students from top notch schools when it comes to graduating and entering full time employment. I pondered how I could and the answer I have found is an internship. Typically the average student might become an intern once during their Junior or Senior year (and majority of internships require you to be a Junior or Senior). I have emailed over 60 companies in every business concentration imaginable from sports marketing to commodity trading and everything in between and I have been more than willing to move across the country and be an unpaid intern without much luck except for one company. I worked very hard just to recieve a reply and it just happened that this one real estate company was generous enough to be willing to talk me and entertain my application. I spoke with the owner for about an hour the other day and I worked very hard not to mess this opportunity up and luckily he seemed to be very impressed and by first impressions he seems like a really great guy to work with and I feel like we would get along perfectly. I haven't been offered an unoffical or official offer for this Summer internship (very likely because it is only October lol) but we are still in contact, he wants to stay in contact, and he has provided me with great resources to tap into. IF something about this opportunity goes south (which I hope and will work hard to make sure nothing does) I would like a contingency plan. where is a good place besides the usual indeed.com and linkedin.com to find internships in real estate or the world of investments as a whole? A little about me I work part time while going to school full time, I had an alright high school unweighted GPA of 3.73 with a handful of AP classes, I have loads and loads of volunteer and club experience (Club President, Eagle Scout, etc.) and I always strive to be the best. Thanks for the future comments!

As a highschool student, I want to get as much education in real estate as I can. I have been looking at taking online courses before college to help me build a resume geared towards real estate and to expand my knowledge of real estate whether it be appraising or some other category (however im particularly interested in real estate developing). The one online school I have seen is the Allied real estate courses but they don't have the best reviews on their courses. Is there a better online course to do other than Allied? Thank you.

Is she on BP or is her email on her website if she has one?

Hey Manolo, do you think there is a way I could contact Karen Margrave?

What is sub out their construction part? Like substituting your company with other construction companies?

I was thinking similarly to a car dealership with an auto shop where a lot of revenue comes from the service too but instead other developers and what not use my construction and my architects etc. Is that an uncommon and unsuccessful idea? I feel like it would save lots of money in the long run too.

Hello, I've been trying to learn everything I can about development and what not while in highschool so I can be as prepared as possible. Is vertical integration a thing in real estate development like it was with J.D. Rockefeller in the oil industry . For example his company not only harvested oil but they also transported it with their own railroads and distributed it themselves and sold it themselves. Could you do the same in development such as owning your own construction company and architects and agents and what not, along with the development itself? How long would it take to get to that stage and is it worth it if the opportunity is available? Thank you.

Hello I'm in highschool and interested in becoming a real estate developer.  I was wondering what people do and can do to start up passive income other than owning and holding (with comparatively low capital) to fund/partly fund development projects. I'm also interested in how you guys got the ball rolling. Thank you!

Thank you very much @Manolo D. I honestly can't wait to get started and want to start ASAP. Construction management sounds to me like a degree I would enjoy more than something like finance with a concentration in real estate.  After that when I would start flipping and rehab, should I rehab with a contractor/crew and such or do I be my own contractor with some help? That might be a dumb question I don't know though. Thank you.

Thank you for the responses @JasonMunson and @KrisHaskins. I would like to go to as prestige and great of a college as I can. I also wanted to double major in finance and real estate or real estate and construction management so I could also have a decent backup plan if the risk is too much for me in real estate like banking or construction management. Any thoughts on the best degree combos? Or if double majoring is a bad idea for REI? I'm not sure if there is a civil engineer in my town but for sure a few contractors and maybe a property management company not sure. Thanks.
