Would buying in George town to rent by room work? Example get 4 a bedroom 2 bath SFH, rent 3 rooms, live in one, and probably end up paying 800 a month of the mortgage (at 3200 monthly). Then in 2-3, years move out rent all 4 and they should be able to pay for the mortgage maybe everything increases and possibly some cash flow?

thanks for the tips, yea I think even in a 4bed I think ill still end up having to pay for part of the mortgage while I'm there but I think after it could possibly pay for itself and theoretically rents would go up as well which should help but technically taxes will also go up (good old texas). I think most houses in Austin at least give you equity capture but I don't like banking on that.

Howdy,

I'm looking to try house hacking in Austin, thinking it'd be best to get a 400kish 4 bed 2+ bath in a SFH with a FHA (3.5% down) and was wondering what are the going rates for renting a room in Austin and any tips or tricks that help with the process and if it gets a lot harder after moving out of the house (plan on living 2-3 years in it ideally).

Also, random side note, Is a room 10ft by 11ft too small to rent?

A lot of the houses I see won't cash flow if you do traditional and so it seems to me the only way I would be able to do this is by renting by the room.

Thanks in advance
