Thanks for posing this question. I enjoyed reading the many thoughtful responses. The only thing left to say is congratulations on thinking this through and doing the HW. Can you keep us posted on how well it's going?

It sounds to me like they are doing what I'd like to do in the next couple of years. Great way to live elsewhere without all the expenses of renting.

You can also message area hosts who have excellent reviews and proposition them.

Vacation Soup is a new alternative listing site that is membership based. They do this by forcing members to use their own vr website. Wordpress in this case and they give you free Wordpress site to create your own but you can used your website host and join them with it.

@Andrew Wong what do you do to “pair up” with someone who is going to be your reliable on the ground person? Iow, what specifically do you do to find/ hire that person and how do arrive at proper compensation for them?

Short term rental taxes are levied by some municipalities. Check on that in your area.

Good questions. Ask yourself, as a guest, would you pay a surcharge to be higher up with a view? Or without a view? Is it worth the $40,000 cost to you to recapture any price differential? Too risky, even if it was worth it to you, given the potential to level the playing field with views.

I’d walk up a flight but probably not 5. At the end of the day, if you were staying there, would you personally want the view ( of the same ocean) you’d see when you are lounging at the beach all day long?
