@Anna Watkins I asked that specifically, especially since I have other accounts at that bank.  They said no.

@Anna Watkins This may be a Jersy-ism.  I'll look into whether I can have an account that co-mingles security from multiple tenants, but I'm pretty sure I can't.

@Dan Barli, I did a heavy renovation of the building, and was living in the buildings department for a while.  They inspected the building, and I got the C of O from them.  But no mention of other registration or registering leases.

I own a three family in JC.  I've heard that in general it necessary to register apartments/leases with localities NJ.  I already have a green card (no longer an actual physical green card) registration with the state.  However when I try to figure out who to register my units with on the local level, I hit a brick wall.  I've tried a few different offices.

I walked into the JC Division of Landlord / Tenant Relations, and asked.  They only care about building with five units or more, that might be subject to rent regulation.  They didn't care about my three unit.  I went into JC City Hall and asked at the front desk, they had no idea.  This comes into play when trying to do an eviction, so I called the housing court office in the Hudson County courthouse.  They had no idea.

So does anyone know who it is, or does JC/Hudson County not care about rentals in 1-4 family buildings.  I haven't had to do an eviction yet.  I don't want to put myself behind the eight ball if I do.

Any help appreciated.

Try this guy.  He makes a specialty in cabinets for rehabbers.  I've met him but not used him yet.  I know people who swear by him.

This is a very specific question, but probably not all that uncommon a situation especially for LLs who specialize in student rental.

I have a new tenant who's a foreign student.  They're on an F1 visa, and I've confirmed their validity with the school they are attending.  They've given me a bank check for the security deposit.  They also gave a fill out I-8 form, which appears to be appropriate for this situation.  However, as a non-resident foreign national, they don't have an SSN.  Note that the unit in question is in Jersey City, NJ, but I don't think this is a location specific issue.

I went to the bank that's been handling my security accounts.  Without an SSN or TIN, they just flat out won't open an account.  I will have to try other banks.  I'm worrying that this is common.

What have other LLs who've had to deal with this done?  Have you found banks that will open accounts with an SSN but with an I-8?  Are there other ways of handling this?

Any help appreciated.

This is going to make for some serious culture clash with the old timers.

I've been here for a while, and there's something I've never figured out about the forum interface.

I see replies starting tagged with the @<username of user being replied to>.  But I see no "reply" button or anything of the sort.  I think I tried starting my posts typeing "@<username>" but it just came in as plain text.

I'm clearly missing something, but I don't know what it is.  I'm usually good with technical issues, but I'm not getting this one.
