One thing to be aware of - when you are considering names and you find one that you are leaning towards, make sure that the name is available with your state's secretary of state; make sure that it is not trademarked; and you should check domain name availability.  If you want to establish a brand with your name, you want to make sure that you can fully use it in your dealings with the public.

@Charles LeMaire  That sounds fascinating.  That's one method that was not mentioned in Brandon's book on real estate investing.

@Susan Zientek  Great to hear there are plenty of others in a similar situation.  This is an exciting (and challenging) time of life.

@Dion McNeeley  Thanks Dion.  Good point on the refi/cash flow for the cabin.  I'll need to run the numbers pretty carefully to make sure it works.

@Joe Splitrock  You are so right about mindset.  It's huge.  I felt like I started "waking up" (no, not woke) sometime after I turned 50 about the possibilities in life.  I read The Magic of Thinking Big several years ago which really helped change my mindset; read Napoleon Hill; read Altucher's Choose Yourself.  So my mind really switched from the standard working for a living at your career to considering all the possibilities for other avenues of income.

So, me and a buddy had an app developed a few years back that was like a Facebook for news. It was pretty cool, but required too much work from people so it never went anywhere. I recently launched a blog focused on middle age life. We'll see where that leads. I'm not sure it's so much as a tremendous amount of will power as it is being opened to the potential of generating income through multiple sources that I can direct. My wife has now caught the bug too. Hopefully, with the correct mindset and determination, and with the helpful and encouraging feedback from all the good people here, we will become successful in REI.

@Pat L. Wow, that's an inspirational story! And I love the saying you put up. I definitely wish I had found REI earlier in life but I'm pretty excited that I finally found it. And I can help my kids to see the light and not wait as long as we did. Thanks for the encouragement Pat.

@Kevin McGuire Thanks for the advice Kevin. The fact that you waited until your 50s to start REI is also really encouraging.

I realize doing the cabin Airbnb then moving on to more traditional rental is a bit quirky. But, the only thing my wife has really wanted for many years is a cabin in the mountains. We Airbnb those frequently ourselves. So, we got the idea of getting into REI to defray some/all of the cost of the mortgage and then expanded the concept into REI to help build long-term, continuing wealth after we retire. I didn't want her to have to give up her dream. We were going to buy a cabin anyway, so we decided to try to meld both goals together, and then move on to long term rentals. That's the initial plan anyway.

Thanks @Bill Manassero  After @Alina Trigub mentioned your site, I checked it out.  Looks like your site will be very helpful for the niche of middle age investors.  I'm looking forward to checking out your podcasts.  And I'm especially impressed with your mission work in Haiti.  That's amazing.  God bless, Mike

@Larry Turowski and @Alina Trigub  Thanks for your helpful comments.  The message I got is definitely get started but be more careful and certain about the deal than I might have to be if I were 30 years younger.
