Justin,

I agree with Samarn. I would cut your teeth on a Duplex, Triplex or Quad first, get experience managing and landlording, then venture into a small commercial investment. If your current situation allows, you could even house hack the Du, Tri or Quad with a 3.5% FHA loan and get a really nice start in your RE career.

Yes I'm also interested in suggestions for reading materials regarding note investing?  Any recommendations?

Welcome Shawn!

I can't stress enough as well how great the guides, podcasts and forums are to self educate yourself in RE.  The whole website is remarkable.

Joe,

Thanks for contacting me.  It would be great to have some skin in the game in my native city!

Hello BP!

I am a new member from NYC. My name is Michael Tranzilli. I have always been interested in REI and have finally made the decision to take action. The only prior RE experience I have is managing a few raw land lots my parents owned.(paying taxes, maintaining them, negotiating the sale of them). I started my search online and couldn't believe my good fortune when I found BP. I was waiting for the "catch" because obviously there was no way possible that there could be a site you could go to and get ALL of this wonderful information without being up sold something......But obviously THERE IS! I have basically been going to the University of Bigger Pockets the last two months absorbing as much as I can. I got married last year and my wife and I are now expecting our first child. What has been initially "calling" to me are the strategies of house hacking a multi-family and note investing. I have been investing in stocks, bonds, etc since I was in college but never notes. Jeff Brown's BP Podcast 017 and Dave Van Horn's BP Podcast 028 really got me interested in the whole concept of note investing. Our house hack will have to be limited to somewhere that makes sense for our work commute.(I'm a construction manager for a solar energy company out of Brooklyn and she is a teacher in Manhattan. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and still have family there so I am leaving myself open also to the possibilities of multi family investing in NY, NJ and PA. I am extremely excited about this new journey that I am taking and very happy that I have found this community. I am going to the Brooklyn Queens Meetup hosted by Damon Bodine in February but wanted to know are there any other BP meetups or any other good non upselling REI groups in the NYC area? Thanks.
